At 16, I had the privilege to go on the very first OHNF medical mission to Ethiopia. After arriving at the hospital on the very first day and seeing almost a thousand people waiting for us to arrive, I immediately started to understand the magnitude of the trip. Access to healthcare is something I truly care about, and these trips continue to renew my faith in its importance.

I started small by helping in any way I could. In Ethiopia, the operating room and the clinic were three floors apart with no elevator. I became a runner who transported messages and supplies up and down the stairs all week. By the time we went to Peru, I was able to help triage patients, assist with endoscopies, and suture superficial wounds. I’m starting my first year of medical school this summer, and my eventual goal is to be able to participate in these trips as one of the surgeons. However, until then, I want to do everything within my capabilities to make an impact.

These missions have become some of the best memories of my entire life. I spend around 10 days a year on the actual trip then proceed to rave about how amazing of an experience it was for the other 355 days of the year. I’ve met great people both on the team and in the places we’ve served who’ve helped me grow as a person and expand my worldview. The trips are extra special for me because I get to share the experience with my father, brother, and grandmother. We get to work together as a team and as a family on something we’re all passionate about.

When a group of genuinely caring people work together to do something good in the world, the results are incredible. I hope you decide to be a part of it.

As we get closer to the start of the upcoming Impact Mission, I am overflowing with excitement and anticipation for the work we are going to do in Antigua, Guatemala. I am so grateful that this foundation trusts and believes that I can lead the Impact Team. I am devoting all of my energy towards accomplishing our three main goals: painting the school’s stage, fixing their desks, and building them a new kitchen. In everything I do, I try to give nothing less than all my focus, care, and effort. I have been on five humanitarian missions in the past and each time I’ve looked to raise the bar for what I can do to help my team. For this mission to Antigua, I look to raise the bar yet again.

I think many can relate to the isolating feeling of struggling in silence. However humans are incredibly resilient, and they make the best of the cards they’re dealt. I have both heard and witnessed truly inspirational stories about people finding a way to persist despite dreadful circumstances. In the past, the parents of the students often stepped in to provide a helping hand when the school needed work done on campus in efforts to relieve their financial burden.

The school we are assisting in Antigua have a supportive community that give their all to offer their students a quality education even if they don’t always have sufficient resources. They have accomplished so much through faith and a strong work ethic, and it would be my honor to donate my time and energy to help them where I can.

Through my volunteer experiences, I have learned that just because someone can use the help doesn’t mean they’re helpless. I view these missions as attempts to lighten the load where we can for communities that have been carrying it alone for too long. I believe these missions are a form of acknowledgement to communities that could use help but don’t foresee aid coming in the future. They serve as a reminder that there are people outside of their community who would like to help and can make an impact that stretches beyond the completion of the physical work.

We are able to continue having these missions through the giving nature of so many donors who contribute what they can. We hope you’ll assist us in helping others in Guatemala. Thank you so much.
